Unit conversion

Energy Converter

Convert energy between J, kJ, kWh, and BTU (IT) with fixed factors, including kilowatt-hour to joule and British thermal unit examples.

How it works

1 kJ = 1,000 J; 1 kWh = 3,600,000 J; 1 BTU (IT) = 1,055.05585262 J

1 kWh = 3,600,000 J (3.6 × 10⁶ J); 1 kWh = 3,412.14 BTU (IT), rounded.

Convert through the base unit: result = value × source factor / target factor. Factors above specify each unit in the base unit. Results are rounded only for display.

FAQ

Which BTU definition is used?

The International Table definition, BTU (IT). Other BTU definitions have slightly different conversion factors.

What is the difference between kW and kWh?

kW measures power. kWh measures energy: one kilowatt sustained for one hour.

Does this include conversion efficiency?

No. It expresses the same energy in different units. Equipment efficiency is a separate calculation.
